Incredible set of vintage astronomical drawings by Étienne Léopold Trouvelot (1827-1895), French astronomer, sericulturist and artist. Inspired by what he saw through telescopes, self-taught Trouvelot created this set of illustrations that set the standard of astronomical illustration before the invention of the photographic dry-plate. His works were praised by The New York Times for their impressiveness. Scribners, the publisher, acclaimed that his set of prints was one of their most successful titles of the period. Trouvelot, also best known for introducing non native moths to America, left the legacy of over 50 scientific papers and nearly 7000 scientific illustrations on subjects ranging from astronomy and butterflies to reptiles and geology.
