Scene along the old General Crook Trail in North Central Arizona.

The trail was blazed in the 19th Century by the U.S. Army’s Indian Wars fighter George Crook and his men from Fort Whipple in Prescott to Fort Verde in today’s Camp Verde, and on to Fort Apache near Whiteriver. The trail descended into the Verde Valley by way of Copper Canyon, the same grade that Interstate 17 drops into the Valley today. Both hiking paths and modern roads, including parts of Interstate Highway 17, follow the trail’s route today. Original image from Carol M. Highsmith’s America, Library of Congress collection.
