Anaconda smelter, Montana. Anaconda Copper Mining Company. Copper converter in action. Object of converting is to eliminate sulphur and iron; this is accomplished by blowing compressed air through the molten charge. The oxidation products unite with silica which is added to form a slag which floats on the surface and is easily skimmed off by Russell Lee
