Ship launching in Portland, Maine. Eight vessels slid into the water in a record breaking launching August 16, 1942, at a large New England shipyard. Christening five cargo-carrying ships built for Britain at the mass launching were, left to right: Mrs. Peter V.O. Evans, wife of a director of the British Ministry of Shipping; Mrs. Ralph C. Brewster, wife of the junior U.S. Senator from Maine; Mrs. Harley M. Kilgore, wife of the senior U.S. Senator from West Virginia; Mrs. Alexander Symon, wife of the British Ministry of Shipping; Mrs. Joseph Haag, Jr., wife of a vice president of the Todd Shipyards Corporation.
