Part of the “Rain Forest Carousel” at the Philadelphia Zoo in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The facilitiy — considered the nation’s first true zoo — was chartered in 1859, but its opening was delayed until 1874 by the national crisis before, during, and shortly after the American Civil War. It opened with 1,000 animals and an admission price of 25 cents. For a brief time, it also housed animals brought over from safari on behalf of the Smithsonian Institution, which had not yet built the National Zoo in Washington, D.C..
