The Ruth Ann Dodge Memorial, known locally as the "Black Angel," in Council Bluffs, a city across the river from larger Omaha, Nebraska.
This sculpture was created by David Chester French, who also produced the massive statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Depicting the wife of a former Civil War general who became chief engineer of the Council Bluffs-based Union Pacific Railroad, the statue became the focus of a dark legend and superstition having to do with Mrs. Dodge's correct premonition that her death was at hand.
