An Amish or Mennonite woman and her horse and horsecart traverse the country roads of Washington County, Iowa, near the town of Kalona.
Ancestors of these people, who lead what they call the "plain life" and forsake modern conveniences and clothing to differing degrees, left Europe and first settled in the eastern U.S. state of Pennsylvania. As their numbers grew, many left, literally looking for "greener pastures" and settled in Iowa, bringing some customs with them and leaving others behind.
