The ceramic spheres, o.6 cm in diameter, used in the modified hot recycled solid retorting process developed at LLNL.
LLNL's modified hot-recycled-solid (hrs) retorting process is being used to decompose or treat harmful chemicals and compounds. In collaboration with Sandia, LLNL adapted an on site plant to demonstrate the feasibility of decomposing sodium nitrate using a circulating bed of hot ceramic spheres. researchers are studying the feasibility of pretreating the mixed wastes stored at the Hanford, WA site. This modified hrs process has potential for addressing many aspects of waste treatment.
