Double looped strand of MA forming a pseudoknot with a bend shown in red.
LBL chemists (structural biology div.) produced the first three dimensional image of an MA structure showing the presence of adenosine (red) between the two stems of the pseudoknot creating a bend in the pseudoknot's shape that helps retroviruses reproduce within the invaded cell. without the adenosine there is no bend, and the retrovirus cannot reproduce. The most notorious retrovirus under study is HIV.
