Yucca Mountain is the site congress designated for study to determine its suitability as a geologic repository for the nation's spent nuclear fuel and high level radioactive waste. It is 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas in an isolated part of Nye county. The long narrow ridge is in an arid transition zone between the lower Mojave desert and the rugged basin and range regions.
