Interior view of the hfbr at brookhaven national lab with oscillation grid overlay.
Operating since 1965, the hfbr is a heavy-water moderated and cooled research reactor with an enriched uranium element fuel. Research into nuclear physics and materials science is conducted primarily through neutron-scattering experiments. This 40-mw reactor has nine beam ports, with nine beam tubes for neutron spectrometers. The hfbr provides a powerful experimental tool for investigating the structure and dynamics of condensed matter. The reactor was permanently shut down on november 16, 1999, being on stand-by status since 1996.
