Cattle grazing on the Burgess ranch.
Burgess ranch has transitioned from farming to solely raising cattle. The family transitioned after several years of poor returns on the farming side of the operation. They have planted farm ground back to perennial vegetation after using cover crops to jump start the soil biology after years of farming. They are now intentionally taking a holistic, systems approach to the operation which includes using practices (water placement, electric fence, intensive grazing, pollinator plantings) to improve the land resource and operation viability. NRCS has provided some assistance through technical expertise, CSP, and EQIP. Garfield County, Montana. June 2020. Original public domain image from Flickr
