Stephen Becklund, manager of the J Bar L Ranch near Twin Bridges, Mont., developed and implemented a conservation plan with NRCS. He converted an alfalfa field to a mix of grasses and clovers, converted a flood irrigation system to a more water-efficient sprinkler irrigation system, and installed cross fences to rotate his cattle to more evenly graze his pastures.
