From March to May, the Milky Way is visible in the hours before sunrise.
Later on, it will start to rise earlier, June through August are the best viewing times because the Milky Way is up most of the night. From September through November, the Milky Way is most visible in the hours after sunset.
Night skies are endangered! It's getting more difficult to find completely dark locations to watch the stars. There are many locations on your public lands that provide ideal viewing locations. In this photo, low clouds amplify light pollution from nearby communities, interfering with the beauty of the Milky Way.
This photo was taken on the Pacific Crest Trail on the Owens Peak section near Ridgecrest, California. The BLM manages many miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, which takes hikers from Mexico to Canada.
