Colourful Kawakawa, New Zealand.

Coal was found in the area in 1861 and Kawakawa developed as a service town. Kawakawa has since been known as NZ's Train Town. Railway tracks still run down the middle of the main street.

Renowned Architect Freidensreich Hundertwasser from Austria was a permanent Kawakawa resident from the 70's till his death in 2000. He created many comtemporary building desings around the world. He was commissioned to design Kawakawa's World famous Hundertwasser toilets, located in the Bay Of Islands.

Kawakawa is a small quaint town you pass by on your way to Opua, or Paihia. Travelling North the town is on your left so make sure you turn left and take a break in Kawakawa. Original public domain image from Flickr
