Dead monarchs on the ground in Mexico
If you look closely, you’ll see that these monarchs are missing their abdomens. Birds and mice prey upon the millions of butterflies clustered in trees during the winters in Mexico. It’s estimated that 15 percent of overwintering monarchs in Mexico die due to predation - just another factor to their complex life history.
