Tundra Swan

A pair of Tundra Swans have been visiting the Ohio River around Broadback Island. True to their name, these summer on the Arctic tundra (and then spend the winter on the coasts -- they are an uncommon sight on the Ohio River). In the east, they favor wintering at Chesapeake bay, where they eat the local clams and would have been seen by generations of settlers, but they were only first described by Meriwether Lewis, who called them "Whistling Swans" after the sound made by their wings in flight.
