Belted Kingfisher
The Belted Kingfisher is the mascot of Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge, though they can be elusive. If you want to see one, your best bet is to look in the quieter backchannel side of the islands, or at some of the local wetlands. Listen for their unique, sustained rattling chatter - a call you won't forget once you learn it! The call will lead you to the bird, perched on a twig with its stubby legs; the Kingfisher dwells in long riverbank tunnels, and the short legs allow them to reach their underground nest.
