Northern Flickers
Northern Flickers, which somehow seem like the forgotten woodpecker - perhaps because of their name. Or perhaps it is because, unlike other woodpeckers, they are often seen foraging on the ground for ants or beetles, rather than on trees. Or perhaps they aren't thought of as woodpeckers because, rather than being black and white and red, they are brilliantly colorful, with a white rump patch and bright yellow under the trail and wings: it is on account of this fiery flashing of yellow that they are called "Flickers." They are one of our most colorful birds in the winter forest - spectacular in the morning sunlight!
