Bobolink
Another sign that the warmer weather is upon us...

There are lots of Bobolinks out on the refuge this time of year. You'll seem them in tall grasslands and fields. The males, in their breeding plumage, are particularly noticeable.

Related to blackbirds, Bobolinks are somewhat smaller than a Red-winged blackbird. They are impressive travelers, migrating as much as 12,500 miles (round trip) between their breeding and wintering grounds in South America.

Bobolinks have declined about 65% since the mid-1960's - due, primarily, to the loss of grassland and field habitat.
