Atlantic salmon parr emerging from streambed.
As the young salmon deplete their yolk sac nutrients, they emerge from the gravel habitat to feed. They pick out a "home rock" or plant, from which they dart out to capture insect larvae and other food passing in the conveyor belt of their home stream. They become territorial, guarding their home rock by driving away encroaching rivals. Credit: E. Peter Steenstra/USFWS. Original public domain image from Flickr
