Muscidine Grapes
Long before Europeans arrived in North America, about six varieties of grapes were already growing here, including the muscadine grapes seen in the picture. These grapes can be found growing in the wild from Delaware to the Gulf of Mexico and in a variety of different soil types. On Assateague, muscadines prefer to grow in well drained soils and will ‘vine up’ anything it can wrap it tendrils around. Original public domain image from Flickr
