Eagle River Elementary STEM Learning Labs
On Jan.27, six volunteering Alaska District engineers and scientists conducted two simultaneous learning labs with about 20 students ranging from kindergarten through sixth grade at Eagle River Elementary School. During the sessions, the children navigated through the West Point Bridge Designer software, then participated in a hands-on bridge building activity using pasta, toothpicks and marshmallows. Afterwards, the students tested the suitability of the structures under the weight of a toy car. The event was an opportunity to familiarize the youth with the Corps’ mission and career opportunities, while encouraging an education in the “hard sciences.”. Original public domain image from Flickr
