Army Engineer Spouses Club welcomes "Original Rosies" to Washington, D.C.

The Army Engineer Spouses Club welcomed a group of over 30 "Rosie the Riveters" from Michigan at Ronald Reagan International Airport in Arlington, Virginia, March 22, 2016. Now in their 80s and 90s, these American women entered the workforce in the early 1940's during World War II, as male enlistment in the war left gaping holes in the industrial labor force. The character “Rosie the Riveter” was popularized as part of the government campaign aimed at recruiting female workers for the munitions industry, and her "We Can Do It" slogan became one of the most iconic images of working women during the war. Decades later, it is still a powerful symbol for women's empowerment.
