August 7, 2012 Surrounded by Pollock!

While diving in harbors and estuaries in northern New England, it is not uncommon to have large schools of silvery fish swim by. "The sensation of being surrounded by hundreds or thousands of fish is a unique experience. It certainly gives you an appreciation for the bounty and productivity of the sea." - EPA Diver Phil Colarusso

Pollock is one of several species of schooling fish known to transit the harbors and estuaries of New England. Pollock are active pelagic fish feeding primarily on small fish, pelagic crustaceans and copepods. They in turn serve as prey for gray seals, harbor seals, spiny dogfish and in some locations minke whales.
