Many forest fungi species form mutualistic relationships w/ other plants.

The mycelium of fungus species form exterior sheaths around roots of partner plants. Strands of mycelium are smaller than tree roots, so they 'extend' the plant’s root system, so they absorb water and nutrients more effectively. Original public domain image from Flickr
