The Great North Road

Today was, in short, a run over to Doncaster.

A while ago, Laura and I passed the turn off on the A1 for the East End of the A57, and I said that the Snake Pass was a lovely road and we should try it some time. Today we did, and we combined it with a visit to our lovely friend Bex and her folks.

The journey was...fun.I asked the Sat Nav to take us to Bex's house, and it said it wanted to go the quickest way which is along the M62. I didn't want to go that way, so instead asked it to take me the shortest way, which it suggested was the Woodhead Pass.

That worked for me, as the Snake Pass is just a turn off from the Woodhead Pass, so I followed the directions there, then turned off onto the A57.

The sat nav shouted at us for about eight miles as we passed through Glossop, but was then finally happy that we could continue on the Snake Pass.

We did and it was gorgeous.

Then we got past the Ladybower Reservoir, and it was time to head for Doncaster instead of Sheffield, which the nav duly did, by the shortest route.

It didn't really care that the shortest route was up mountains, along tiny passes, super narrow roads and other such excitement.

It was...different. I actually liked it lots, and would have liked it more if I'd have been 100% confident that it wasn't going to send me along a cliff path or something.

We got there though, and then Bex took us out for a lovely lunch. On the way back from that we stopped at this footpath that goes over the mighty A1(M) because I drive under these bridges all the time, but never get to walk across them.

I took a photo, and here it is, with a cheeky fake tilt shift effect applied for that miniature groove.

Oh, we took the M62 on the way home. Original public domain image from Flickr
