Fish Lake is located on the western slope of Steens Mountain. Steens Mountain encompasses an extraordinary landscape with deep glacier carved-gorges, stunning scenery, wilderness, wild rivers, a rich diversity of plant and animal species, and a way of life for all who live there. Fish Lake is at 7400-foot elevation and set among aspen stands and shore willows. Steens Mountain is located in Oregon's high desert and is one of the crown jewels of the state's wildlands. It is some of the wildest and most remote land left in Oregon. Steens Mountain is in the southeastern part of the state, and is a large fault-block mountain.
