The Linoma Lighthouse, built in 1924 in Sarpy County, midway from Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska (its name is a combination of "Lincoln" and "Omaha"), began as a gas station above which the lighthouse-like structure was built as a landmark on U.S. Highway 6 (principal east-west road before the days of high-speed interstate highways), designed to attract visitors to a small lake and beach beneath it
