Since 1871, a South Haven Light has guarded the entrance to the Black River on Lake Michigan in South Haven, Michigan. The first was made of wood. It was replaced by this steel lighthouse, brightly painted red, in 1903. Ten years later, its pier was extended to 700' feel, and an 800-foot steel catwalk was installed. In 1940, both were lengthened to 1,200 feet
