The C-47 visited Germany for a week to participate in base activities with its legacy unit, the 37th Airlift Squadron, before returning to Normandy to re-create its D-Day role for the 70th anniversary and drop U.S. Army paratroopers over a drop zone in Sainte-Mère-Église, France. The morning of June 6, 1944, Allied forces conducted a massive airborne assault and amphibious landing in the Normandy region of France. The invasion marked the beginning of the final phase of World War II in Europe, which ended with the surrender of Germany the following May. (DoD photo by Staff Sgt.
