Lasioglossum fattigi, f, back, Alleghany Co. VA_2020-02-17-17.15.11 ZS PMax UDR

The Blue Rainbow Bee. (OK...I made that name up...as can anyone since bee common names are up for grabs ....let's frisky up this taxonomy thing up a bit; shall we?). Lasioglossum fattigi. A rare bee, and this one was found by Olivia Latham in a shale barren in the mountains of Virginia. Maybe this is where they all hang out. That also means that they could be in trouble because these barrens dwindle as I write this because we neglect to reset them with fire or herds of mastadons or least a bub with a chainsaw. Trees are sometimes the enemy. Photograph by Cole Cheng.

We Are Made One with What We Touch and See

We are resolved into the supreme air,

We are made one with what we touch and see,

With our heart's blood each crimson sun is fair,

With our young lives each spring impassioned tree

Flames into green, the wildest beasts that range

The moor our kinsmen are, all life is one, and all is change.
