Postdoctoral researcher Martha Gross works in an argon glove box with a test battery cell illustrating a lab-scale sodium iodide battery.
The Sandia National Laboratories research team developed a new sodium iodide catholyte solution (purple liquid) and a special ceramic separator to allow the molten sodium battery to operate at 230 degrees Fahrenheit (110 degrees Celsius).
