Don’t be scared. It’s just a ghost crab emerging from the depths at night to hunt. And there are thousands of them.
The small, speedy and translucent pallid ghost crabs hide in sand burrows during the day, coming out at night to scavenge.
Shore crabs are found throughout the Pacific Islands. This pallid ghost crab was spotted at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, on the outer northwest reaches of the Hawaiian archipelago.
Ghost crabs on the refuge have been observed hunting nearly 200 yards from the ocean shore!
